Pebbles, who held the title of the world’s oldest confirmed living dog, has died. I was 22 years old.
The 4-pound Toy Fox Terrier died of natural causes on Monday, months before his 23rd birthday, according to Guinness World Records. Pebbles spent his final moments at his home in South Carolina with owners Bobby and Julie Gregory.
“She was a once-in-a-lifetime companion, and it was our honor to have been blessed to have her as a pet and family member,” Julie Gregory wrote in a news release.
Pebbles was born on March 28, 2000 in New York. Guinness World Records confirmed the puppy as the world’s largest in May.
After seeing headlines about TobyKeith, a 21-year-old chihuahua from Florida being formally named the world’s living dog, the Gregorys realized Pebbles was older and applied to break the record.

TobyKeith was born on January 9, 2001, making him more than eight months younger than Pebbles.
In 2000, the family was looking for a larger breed of dog to adopt when they found Pebbles.
“She was jumping and barking at Bobby so much that he had no choice but to pick her up and check on her,” Julie told Guinness. “It was instant love the second they met.”
The couple said Pebbles was the queen of their house ever since.
Pebbles lived a long, loving life, her family said, noting that she spent her days listening to country music, sleeping until 5 p.m. and trying new foods. According to Guinness, Pebbles’ vet put her on a diet of cat food for the last 10 years of her life, but she occasionally indulged, with treats like a stack of ribs for her 22nd birthday.
“She spent her days enjoying country music and being loved,” Julie Gregory wrote, adding that the pup “was spoiled.”
Pebbles also had 32 puppies in her lifetime with her partner Rocky, according to the press release. Rocky died in 2016, but the two “shared many years of companionship.”
“He affected everyone he met,” wrote Julie Gregory. “There was never anyone who knew Pebbles who didn’t love her. She will be greatly missed.”
