Abortion ranked as the most important issue to Michigan voters, beating out inflation and the cost of living, according to a new poll that revealed Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is dominating the race to govern the state.
A Detroit News/WDIV poll of Michigan registered voters found that while the Consumer Price Index (CPI) reported that the year-over-year inflation rate rose to 8.3% in August and domestic gas prices see another spike, abortion was ranked as the most crucial. mid-term problem to 36% of respondents.
In June, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, returning the right to limit abortion to the states. Since that historic decision, Democrats have turned to abortion as a key issue in their midterm strategy.

Inflation and the cost of living were the most important issues for 24% of likely voters in Michigan, while 11% ranked threats to American democracy as the most important issue.

Whitmer has a strong 17-point lead over Trump-backed Republican challenger Tudor Dixon in the state’s gubernatorial race, 50 percent to 32 percent, according to the poll. Whitmer’s lead widened from another recent Detroit News poll in early September that found the Democrat with a 13-point lead over Dixon among Michigan voters.
“It’s not taking hold because nobody has done the work within the Republican electorate to let them know who their candidates are,” Richard Czuba, a pollster and founder of the Glengariff Group, said along with the polling results. which lean heavily in favor of the Democrats.

Whitmer has outperformed his Republican opponent, and an August finance report shows the Democrat had $14 million available in his campaign account, while Dixon disclosed that he only had $523,930 in his coffers.
