Spanish Telecom Giant Telefonica Embraces Bitcoin Payments

One of Spain’s largest phone operators and mobile network providers, Telefónica, has partnered with crypto exchange Bit2Me to allow customers to pay for services in digital assets.

Cryptocurrency adoption seems to be at a high level in the Iberian country. A few months ago, the leading airline, Vueling, said that travelers will be able to buy airline tickets with bitcoins and other assets from January 2023.

Telefónica says “Yes” to Crypto

The Madrid-based corporation allowed customers to pay bills in various cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Circle’s stablecoin USDC, and others on its online marketplace called Tu.

To enable crypto payments, Telefónica joined forces with Spanish digital asset platform Bit2Me, which provided the infrastructure and will monitor transactions.

The news caught the attention of Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) as he shared it on his personal Twitter account.

It is worth saying that your company has recently expanded its presence in the Spanish market. Two months ago, Binance subsidiary Moon Tech Spain received regulatory approval to register as a virtual asset service provider (VASP) in the European country.

“MoonTech’s registration in Spain is a recognition of the hard work and commitment of our teams to provide a platform that puts user protection above all else,” Zhao said at the time.

Vueling also jumped on the bandwagon

Another prominent Spanish firm that has joined the crypto ecosystem in recent months is Barcelona-based airline Vueling.

In June, it partnered with BitPay to allow customers to buy tickets in 13 different digital assets, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Litecoin (LTC), Dogecoin (DOGE), Shiba Inu (SHIB), and others.

The move is expected to see the light of day in early 2023, making Vueling the first low-cost airline in Europe to adopt cryptocurrencies as a payment method.

BitPay’s Vice President of Marketing, Merrick Theobald, said that the Spanish firm “recognizes the potential of cryptocurrencies to transform the airline industry, making payments faster, safer and less expensive on a global scale.”
